“Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves”
Pema Chodron
During and following the Covid-19 pandemic for the first time ever I felt wobbly working in health-care. The prolonged uncertainty, the constant change and the creeping feeling of hopelessness of working in a ‘broken’ system, was having an impact.
I started questioning if working in health-care was for me and this felt scary because when I joined in 2000, I believed I’d be here until retirement.
I wasn’t alone with how I was feeling. Since 2021 there has been a sharp rise in the average intention to leave working in health-care from 19% to 60%.
However, many of us also choose to continue working in health-care, despite the many concerning factors negatively impacting the system. Supporting people to re-connect with the reason they joined healthcare in the first place, is something that can be positively influenced every day.
Through compassion focused coaching and facilitation, two main issues of ‘feeling valued’ and ‘feeling motivated to continue making a difference’ are addressed.
The Coaching Corner is here in service to people who like me feel a bit wobbly and who also choose to continue working in the health-care system.
